Written In 1839.
Remember the faith thou hast pledged at the altar,
Tho' one of a nation neglected, despised,
Oh! ne'er from the faith of thy forefathers falter,
But continue to practise the precepts they prized.
Their religion thro' every danger they cherished,
In the midst of temptation, oppression, and thrall;
They trusted, tho' Salem a season had perished,
She would rise from her ashes more great from her fall.
Let no sceptical doubts in thy bosom awaken
Of the infinite goodness and truth of the Lord;
But, like theirs, may thy faith remain firm and unshaken,
In the wisdom and mercy of Him the adored.
